TCS TOUCHSTONE TEST

Touchstone test:

3 day preparation strategy 4 touchstone test :

Rule 1: Prepare yourself on the following topics; Just brush up your basics: ages, percentages, ratio and proportion, numbers, time and distance, sequence, time and work, probability, permutation and combination & blood relation. {Here probability and per/com is optional because it carries only 3-4 questions on it.}

Rule 2: Go through the previous papers in fresher world of this test. I have also giving you some relevant questions which appeared in our test.

Rule 3: Try to solve the questions by yourself; don't memorize them because data will be change

Rule 4: Try to just interchange the data of the questions and solve them faster and faster. The Time Management is a important skill often tested in aptitude test. So by practicing the questions given below try to develop speed and accuracy.

Rule 5: Speed reading is a important part of this test as all the questions do have some irrelevant data. So in these 3 days of preparation, try to find the relevant data from the question and read very fast.

Tricks for aptitude test:

1) You will be asked to answer 35 questions in 60 minutes. At the beginning, don’t even think to answer all questions.

2) Just go through all the 35 questions and solve the easy ones. Every paper consists of minimum 15-17 easy questions and rest of them moderately difficult.

3) Try to answer the easy ones 15-16 questions out of 35 within 45 mins and also write the individual number of moderately easy ones or mark them [that u think can do within 3-4 mins ] in the scratch paper

4) Last 12-15 mins of the exam, try to solve the marked ones, at least of 5 them.

5) The difference between you and others will lay answering marked ones, so try to solve the easy 15-16 as fast as you can. [Caution: you try to believe that u can acquire 100% accuracy in easy questions; so complete the easy questions of entire range question number 1 to 35 within 40-45 mins.]

5) So after the time is completed, you will find yourself answering 22-24 questions without any rigorous preparation. Those who r a bit slower in calculations can also clear this test by my plan. And cut off, as I already mentioned, lies below 20 around 18-19.

6) Last but not the least, don't try to mark the questions you are not absolutely sure; as the paper consists of negative marking, you will not be able to meet the cutoff.

FRIENDSHIP QUOTE FOR MY FRIENDS

"Sometimes in life, you find a special friend. Someone who changes your life just by being a part of it. Someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop. Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is forever friendship. When you're down and the world seems dark and empty, your forever friend lifts you up in spirit and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full. Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times and the confused times. If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows. If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on. Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay. And if you find such a friend, you feel happy and complete because you need not worry. You have a forever friend, and forever has no end."

TO MAKE IDEAS TO REALITY

INDIA BROADLY HAS HAD DIFFICULTIES WITH TRANSLATING ITS FIRST-RATE RESEARCH INTO VIABLE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS ON THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS WORK WITH THE INDUSTRY PEOPLE TO TRANSLATE THEIR BEST IDEAS INTO REAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. IN UNITES STATES OF AMERICA AT UNIVERSITIES LIKE STANFORD , MIT AND PURDUE STUDENTS OFTEN SEE THEIR GRADUATE THESIS TURN INTO REAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY . THE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER DEPARTMENTS OF INDIAN UNIVERSITIES SHOULD TAKE REAL INTEREST IN THE BEST IDEAS AND EXPOSE THEM TO VENTURE CAPITALISTS IN TURN HELP THEM TO GET FUNDS TO MAKE IT REALITY . CONSIDER PAGE RANK ALGORITHM , WHICH LARRY PAGE AND SERGI BRIN WORKED ON WHEN THEY WERE GRADUATES AT STANFORD. IT BECAME THE BASIS OF THE SEARCH TECHNOLOGY INSIDE GOOGLE / I THINK OUR GREAT UNIVERSITIES LIKE ANNA UNIVERSITY SHOULD TAKE LEAD SHOW THE WAY FOR SUCCESS FOR OUR ENGINEERING STUDENTS /

10 commandments of Facebook

10 commandments of Facebook

London, Nov 08 (ANI): Wonder how much of personal information is fine on Facebook? Well, an expert tells you the dos and don'ts of being a part of the social networking giant.

Dave Whitelegg said that although Facebook is a fun way to keep in touch with friends and family, it can also be dangerous.

"Posting certain photos or information on the site puts you at risk of being fired, a victim of crime, or even worse. There are computer programmes called 'data mining' that sweep Facebook to collect dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses etc. That's gold dust to criminals," the Sun quoted Whitelegg, an IT security expert, as saying.

Here are the 10 things you should never post on Facebook and why.

Date and place of birth- This places you at massive risk of identity theft. They are the most commonly used security questions on password resetting sites.

Mother's maiden name-A lot of sites use your mother's maiden name to authenticate who you are. They also commonly use the school you went to as a security question.

Address- It again puts you at risk from identity fraud, but also from burglars and stalkers.

Holidays-If you post an update on Facebook saying: "Can't wait till next Wednesday - two weeks in Miami yeh!" you are basically saying: "Come and rob me."

Short trips from home-Again, this can put you at risk of burglary and stalking.

Inappropriate photos- Don't post racy, illicit, offensive or incriminating photos. Bosses and prospective employers are increasingly looking at Facebook pages.

Confessionals-These can also get you fired or haunt you for the rest of your life. Posting you are skiving work, who you are sleeping with, or doing something shameful is just dumb.

Phone number-Unless you want to be bombarded with unsolicited phone calls from people trying to sell you something - don't.

Children's names-These can be used by identity fraudsters or, more sinisterly, by paedophiles. It is much easier to steal a child's identity. An adult will eventually discover something is wrong by, for example, their credit rating being affected. Children won't.

Don't post a full public profile-It won't just exist on Facebook, it will go on any internet search such as Google. Only give the bare bones such as a name. Keep everything else private. (ANI)

STATUS OF ENGINEERING COLLEGE STUDENTS

Hi friends
Are we in the right directions related to engineering education in the state ? i dont think so
With no entrance examination to admit students in professional colleges the mathematical aptitude of the students is coming down terribly .

It is also sad to see some of the top IT companies have decided to not to conduct the aptitude test for higher marks students during the recruitment is also not in the right directions .

Even our engineering education is becoming school education with college giving importance to the marks rather than the knowledge /

Many time we have seen students are preparing themselves only for the examination point of view rather than knowledge point of view while doing there engineering degree

I think top companies should make the students realize that it is not only important to have marks but also to have good mathematical and verbal , logical reasoning ability to perform well in the career

in today's Times of India paper has reveled the following , which is very shocking

More than 420 students, pursuing second year Bachelors of Engineering (BE) degree programmes in a college (name withheld) in TN, who were recently given a basic mathematics test comprising 20 simple questions on algebra and trigonometry were unable to get even 50% of the answers right.
What provides telling evidence of the poor quality of math education at the school level is that seven of these students had actually scored over 180 marks in mathematics in the class XII state board examinations but they secured zero in the basic test given by the college. They were unable to answer simple questions like “What is the Factorial of 5” and “What is e to the power
of 0 or e to the power of infinity”.
“This shows the status of our engineering college students. Of the 503 students who took the test, only 6 were able to correctly answer 15 or more questions. While 70 students got a score of 11 to 15; as many as 241 of them were not able to answer more than 10 questions and 154 of them got the correct answers for just five questions or below. The remaining 32 secured zero,” Tamil Nadu commissioner for technical Ku
mar Jayant revealed.
The test was given by the college to assess the mathematical skills of its students and the directorate of technical education is now urging other colleges to conduct similar assessment tests to gauge the knowledge of the students.
The college concerned had 70 students who had secured 180 marks and above in mathematics in

the state board examinations. Of them, only two answered 15 or more questions correctly.
“Any class XI student must be able to solve most of the problems asked. They were simple and direct questions. The results only indicate that at the school level the students had not understood the fundamentals and probably had mugged up,”

My dear students , parents and companies please don't compromise and dilute the learning and testing process

ENGINEERING STUDENTS PROJECT WORK

IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO BRING ALL THE FINAL YEAR PROJECTS OF TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING STUDENTS ACROSS INDIA AND CREATE A POOL . GOOD RESEARCH IS LIKE A WORK OF ART . IT MUST BE CRITIQUED AND EVOLVED . WE SHOULD HAVE A PORATAL THAT CATERS TO THIS KIND OF AN EFFORT . WISH COMPANIES LIKE TCS , CTS , INFOSYS AND WIPRO ETC SHOULD COME FORWARD TO BUILD A PORTAL AND BE MENTOR TO THE FINAL YEAR STUDENTS.

EVEN OTHERWISE EVERY INSTITUTIONS COULD HAVE ITS OWN PORTAL , WHERE A PAGE COULD BE AVAILABLE TO EVERY TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ( TO UPLOAD HIS ABSTRACT ) . THIS SHOULD BECOME MANDATORY AND CAN BE EASILY BE DONE . ONCE THIS HAPPENS WITH EVERY GROUP , A DATABASE AT THE INSTITUTE LEVEL IS CREATED AND THIS PORTAL CAN BE LINKED TO THE CONCERNED UNIVERSITY AND ALSO TO AICTE PORTAL OR TO THE THIRD PARTY PORTAL.

AICTE COULD HARNESS PROJECTS FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY AND THE DATA COULD ACCESSED BY ALL STAKEHOLDERS.

THE ADVANTAGES WOULD BE MANY . RESEARCH AND NEW IDEAS WOULD BE GENERATED. IN OUR PAST EXPERIENCES WE HAVE REALIZED THAT ONCE STUDENTS PASS OUT FINAL YEAR THERE IDEAS DIE. WE SHOULD NOT LET THIS HAPPEN IN FUTURE. WHEN SUCH PORTAL COMES IT COULD LET THOSE IDEAS GROW INTO OTHERS . A NATIONAL DISCUSSION FORUM COULD ALSO BE CREATED WITHIN IT . EXPENSE IS NOT CONSTRAINT AND WE FEEL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES WILL DEFINITELY FACILITATE SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN THE NEAR FUTURE .

NSIT ( NARASUS SARATHY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ) HAS ALREADY STARTED THE PROJECT PORTAL FOR THE INSTITUTION / WE NEED MORE IDEAS TO DEVELOP AND WISH MORE STUDENTS TAKE IT UP TO THERE COLLEGES TOO

LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR RESPONSES

VERY HAPPY DIWALI

BRING YOUR IDEA TO LIFE

A NEW IDEA CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

SEIZE THE MOMENT AND MAKE HE MOST OF IT

A BIG IDEA CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING

REMEMBER , PEOPLE MAY NOT ACCEPT YOUR IDEA INITIALLY. IF YOU ARE TOO YOUNG , THEN YOU ARE IN DANGER OF PEOPLE NOT TAKING YOU SERIOUSLY . IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL THEN SOMEONE MIGHT STEAL YOUR IDEA . IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY THEN YOU MAY GET A RAW DEAL DUE TO DESPERATION . YOU HAVE TO BE VERY PROFESSIONAL IN THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU HANDLE THIS PHASE

LET US TAKE THE EXAMPLE OF SABEER BHATIA FOR INSTANCE . HE ALMOST HAD 20 REJECTONS BEFORE SOMEONE WAS READY TO LISTEN TO HIM. MANY OF THEM SAID HE WAS TOO YOUNG , HAD VERY LITTLE EXPERIENCE , NO MANGEMENT EXPERIENCE AT ALL , AND HAD HARDWARE BACKGROUND . BUT THAT DID NOT DISCOURAGE HIM . HE WENT ON TO IMPRESS SOME ONE AND GOT $300,000 INVESTMENT . WITH 15 PEOPLE IN THE COMPANY HE STARTED HOTMAIL AND REST IS THE HISTORY. SO IT PROVES THAT HE HAD A PASSION TO MAKE HIS IDEA WORK , AND HE MADE IT POSSIABLE

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE FAITH IN YOUR IDEAS AND BACK IT UP WITH PASSION , HARD WORK , DETERMINATION , TACT AND SHREWDNESS .

NEVER BELITTLE YOUR STANDARDS TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS .. ALWAYS FIGHT YOUR WAY THROUGH , THE HARDER THE BATTLE , THE SWEETER THE VICTORY

SO MY DEAR YOUNG FRIENDS START WORKING ON YOUR BIG IDEA BECAUSE WORLD IS WAITING

THINKING OUT OF BOX

EVERY YEAR, THOUSANDS OF INNOVATIONS , FROM AN ENGINE THAT RUNS ON COMPRESSED AIR TO A BLACK BOX THAT WOULD HELP FIX RESPONSIBILITY IN ROAD ACCIDENTS , ARE BORN IN UNIVERSITIES , CITIES , TOWNS AND EVEN VILLAGES ACROSS INDIA. THE ONLY TOOL TO HELP TAKE THEM FROM DRAWING BOARD TO FACTORY FLOOR IS NIF ( NATIONAL INNOVATION FUND ) , A GOVERNMENT FUNDED BODY WITH A BUDGET OF 1.5 CRORE A YEAR . THAT'S LESS THAN COST OF A TWO BED ROOM FLAT IN SOUTH MUMBAI . WORSE , THERE IS NO DEFINED POLICY TO ENCOURAGE SOCIAL ENTERPRISES AND INNOVATION

IDEAS TO OVERCOME

1. INCREASE THE BUDGET OF NIF AND ALLOCATE AT LEAST 1 % OF EACH MINISTRY'S TOTAL BUDGET TO ENCOURAGE NEW IDEAS AND SOCIAL INNOVATIONS IN THERE RESPECTIVE FIELDS

2. CREATE INTEREST FREE GOVERNMENT LOANS FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES. MAKE INVESTMENTS IN AND EARNINGS FROM SOCIAL ENTERPRISES TAX FREE

3. EMPOWER NIF TO INSTITUTE A NATIONAL LEVEL CONTEST FOR THE BEST INNOVATIVE IDEAS OF THE YEAR

4. HELP STUDENTS CONNECT WITH INDUSTRY THROUGH AN ONLINE FORUM - A WEB SITE WHERE SUCH PROJECTS CAN BE UPLOADED AND THROUGH WHICH THE STUDENTS CAN INTERACT WITH THE INDUSTRIALISTS, EXPERTS , OTHER INVENTORS AND EVEN INVESTORS , VENTURE CAPITALISTS.

FRIENDS IF YOU CAN SHARE ANY MORE IDEAS IT WOULD BE GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION

AS FIRST STEP FROM MY SIDE MY COLLEGE NARASU'S SARATHY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WILL SOON START A PORTAL TO SHARE IDEAS FOR INNOVATIVE PROJECTS

FREEDOM TO CHOOSE

FREEDOM TO CHOOSE

THE ACTUAL PROBLEM THE YOUNGSTERS FACE

YOUNG STUDENTS FRESH OUT OF SCHOOL ARE CURRENTLY FORCED TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT WILL DETERMINE THE COURSE OF THERE CAREERS WITH LITTLE FLEXIBILITY IN TERMS OF SUBJECTS ACROSS STREAMS - OR EVEN WITHIN THE SAME STREAM. IN MOST UNIVERSITY IN INDIA, A SCIENCE STUDENT CAN NOT STUDY HISTORY OR AN ARTS STUDENT CANT STUDY BIOCHEMISTRY IF HE OR SHE IS INTERESTED IN THAT PARTICULAR SUBJECT . IN AN E - AGE WHERE FLEXIBILITY AND VERSATILITY ARE KEY , THIS ANTIQUATED SYSTEM IS STIFLING STUDENTS POTENTIAL. ABOVE AL THAT THE PARENTS DECIDE AND FORCE THERE CHILDREN TO TAKE WHAT THEY LIKE IN SPITE OF NOT UNDERSTANDING REAL INTEREST AND POTENTIAL OF THERE WARDS

THE SOLUTION / IDEAS

MAKE A CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM COMPULSORY ACROSS COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN INDIA . / ALLOW STUDENTS TO PICK SUBJECTS ACCORDING TO THERE INTEREST AND APTITUDE , RATHER THAN FROM RIGID , PRE SET GROUPS

MAKE AN ANNUAL ACADEMIC AUDITS COMPULSORY , TO ENSURE THAT THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE UP TO DATE AND RELEVANT AND LEVEL OF INSTRUCTIONS CONSISTENTLY HIGH

STUDENT FEEDBACK COULD BE A PART OF THE ANNUAL AUDIT , WITH PUPILS INVITED TO COMMENT ON TEACHING METHODS AND CURRICULUM

EACH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE SHOULD HAVE A CAREER INFORMATION CENTER WITH A COUNSELOR TO HELP THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS WITH NECESSARY GUIDANCE

SO FRIENDS DO SHARE YOUR IDEAS TO BUILD A STRONGER INDIA

PRIVATE EDUCATION

PRIVATE EDUCATION HAS HUGE OPPORTUNITY IN INDIA SINCE THE PUBLIC SYSTEM IS NOT MEETING THE DEMANDS OF PARENTS. THERE IS NO ACCOUNTABILITY AND MOST OF THE SCHOOLS ARE IN REGIONAL LANGUAGES , WHEREAS PARENTS WAN THERE CHILDREN TO BE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH. HOWEVER, TRYING TO START A SCHOOL IN INDIA IS A NIGHTMARE AS THERE IS A LOT OF RED TAPE. WHILE SOME OF THE REGULATIONS ARE NECESSARY , A FAR LIGHTER TOUCH WOULD BE BETTER. MANY PRIVATE SCHOOLS OFFER BETTER EDUCATION THAN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS , MAY BE AT LITTLE MORE OF COST . VERY FEW GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS HAVE SHOWN BETTER EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS / FOR AN EXAMPLE IN TAMIL NADU NUMBER OF STUDENTS FROM GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS ENTERING MEDICAL EDUCATION (MBBS) IS ALMOST NIL / SO WHILE COMPETITION WILL ENSURE THAT QUALITY IS MAINTAINED , THE GOVERNMENT CAN ALSO TIE UP WITH AN INDEPENDENT BODY TO CREATE RATINGS SYSTEMS FOR SCHOOLS / WHICH WILL ENABLE THE PARENTS TO TAKE A RIGHT CAREER DECISION FOR THERE CHILDREN

ENGINEERING STUDENT PROJECTS SHOULD BE MORE RELAVENT

EVERY YEAR , NEARLY 120,000 OF UNDER GRADUATE STUDENTS OF ENGINEERING GRADUATE FROM VARIOUS ANNA UNIVERSITIES IN THE STATE . ASSUMING THAT FOUR SUCH STUDENTS CONSTITUTE A BATCH FOR COMPLETING THERE FINAL YEAR UG PROJECT AS PER THERE CURRICULUM , ABOUT 30,000 PROJECTS ARE UNDER TAKEN ANNUALLY . ON AN AVERAGE , A STUDENT SPENDS A MINIMUM OF RS. 5,000 PER PROJECT LEADING TOTAL EXPENDITURE OF RS 50 CORES . ON AN AVERAGE , 11 MILLION MAN HOURS ARE LOST . THESE FIGURES REFER TO ONLY INSTITUTIONS IN TAMIL NADU / NATIONALLY THE FIGURES WILL BE PRETTY HIGH . THOUGH SMALLER IN NUMBER , A SIMILAR SITUATION EXISTS IN THE POST GRADUATION PROGRAMMES ALSO. ONE MAJOR OBJECTIVE OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION IS FOR STUDENTS TO CONCEIVE , DEVELOP , AND IMPLEMENT NEW TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE KNOWLEDGE THEY LEARNED THROUGH THERE ENGINEERING STUDIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SOCIETY. THE STUDENTS SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE IMPLICATIONS OF SUCH TECHNOLOGIES ON THE SOCIETY AND ITS QUALITY OF LIFE .THE ONLY AVENUE THROUGH WHICH THIS UNDERSTANDING WOULD EMERGE IS THE FINAL YEAR PROJECTS WHICH HAVE A BEARING ON THE SOCIETY AND CONSTITUENTS LIKE INDUSTRY , ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHERS. THESE PROJECTS GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH THERE ENGINEERING STUDIES FOR A PRODUCTIVE PURPOSE . REQUEST FOR THE STUDENTS DO THINK AND PLAN WELL AHEAD FOR YOUR FINAL PROJECTS AND SEE THAT IT CONTRIBUTES TO WELFARE OF THE NATION / LETS BUILD A GREAT AND STRONGER INDIA / PROUD TO BE INDIAN

Education system in India needs reform

Indian education system needs to be reformed so that it could incorporate culture-based education and link the younger generation with the older one

"The present education is based on Macaulay (a British academician) system. It delinks us from our culture....we have to link the younger generation to our generation and culture,"

Same time we need to build great career for our students with the use of technology
Children in the present generation major cities and towns are more focused towards their career and can take decisions without much confusion as they are not only educated by text books but also through internet. E-education is really becoming popular in the present scenario, now students are getting an opportunity to learn online. That's really great.

EDUCATIONAL REFORMS

Education builds the man so it builds the nation. Today we claim to be the biggest human resources supplier for the world, but are we concerned what quality of human capital we are building and for whose needs? We supply bureaucrats to the government, software engineers to the IT companies around the world, highly paid managers to the multinationals, we supply engineers and science graduates as researchers to the foreign universities. What capital are we building for ourselves?

India aspires to be powerful, it wants to play a role in the international community, for that to happen, its economy has to grow multifold and for that to happen, it requires a huge force of entrepreneurs who could transform it into a nation which produces, from the one which only consumes. India needs a huge force of innovators who could make it self reliant in all kinds of sciences and technologies. India needs artists who could make its culture the most popular in the world. A culture which is not only saleable itself but also helps in selling India’s products across the world. In a nutshell, India needs Henry Fords, Bill Gateses, Thomas Alva Edisons and Michael Jacksons born and educated in India.

One may say we had few. Yes, we had. M. S. Swaminathan who made India self reliant in food grains, Dhiru Bhai Ambani who proved a common man can become a billionaire, Dr. Varghese Kurien who is the father of Amul milk movement, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam who dared to build missiles for India, Pundit Ravishankar who is the ambassador of the Indian music to the world. Such people though in small numbers, were always there. But they are not the products of this education system. This system did not teach them how to become innovators or entrepreneurs or artists. Had it done so, they would have been millions in numbers. These people were inspired themselves. To some of them, their education may have given the technical know-how (though it is hardly conceivable), but not the dream or the inspiration needed. It is the education which should inspire one to become something one really wants to. Education should make you free, should make you experiment and it should make you ask questions. Ultimately, it should make you realize what you are.

Youngsters in India, do not have the freedom of selecting there career, it is said. They are forced to become engineers, doctors, MBA’s and IAS officers, it is said. Yes, agree. But that is not the problem. The problem is, youngsters in India do not have the vision to think beyond. Neither their parents, nor their grandparents had that vision. This is where the root of the problem is. Generations have gone through a system which sucks. Now the beauty is even the law-makers and educators of today’s India are products of that age old system. That is why no less than a revolution is needed in the education system in India.

What do we expect from such a revolution?

A revolution means big changes. We expect the revolution in education to bring lots of changes. These changes will result into:

1. Best talents of the country working in the education sector.

Today, education is not the career of choice, but it is the career of compromise. If you are a teacher, people sympathize, they curse the prevalent unemployment in the country. Education is one of the highest profit making ‘industries’ in the service sector, but its workers are the least paid compared to those working in somewhat glamorous sectors like the IT industry. This has to change.

2. A world class infrastructure.

The experience of shopping at malls is better than the old dirty bazaars. The experience of traveling in a metro train is much better than suffering in the city buses. The experience of driving on four or six lane highways is much better the same way. The same way, infrastructure has a meaning in education. World class universities and schools with world class libraries, laboratories and classrooms, in a world class building make a world class infrastructure for education.

3. Greater investments into education, public as well as private.

We need world class infrastructure and best talents in all schools and universities of India. These resources should not remain limited to a handful of IIT’s or IIM’s. Each village should have a school with all resources and facilities. Each university should have whatever it needs for a better education. This would require huge money and hence, huge investments.

4. Education which encourages innovation and creativity.

When farmers in the villages of Punjab make a vehicle from the diesel engine and name it Maruta (A male version of Maruti), that is innovation. When villagers of the Rajasthan and Gujarat transform the Bike ‘Enfield Bullet’ into a local auto-rickshaw, that is creativity. How many automobile engineering students could do likewise? The question is, how many?

5. Education which encourages entrepreneurship.

In a Hindi movie ‘Nayak’, the father of the actress refuses to permit for her marriage with the actor because he is not a government servant. At last, he permits, but then the Actor had become the chief minister of the state. This mindset of the society, particularly of the middle class, has to be changed. You are not a respectful person if after education you start a business, as that is seen as a failure in getting a job. It is the task of the education system to change this mindset. It also has to inspire the youth for the necessary courage and vision for entrepreneurship.

SHARING CHILDREN PROBLEMS

All parents desire that their children share their problems with their parents. However, many children do not share the same desire. Why does such a situation arise?

It is very often painful for children to bring up their problems to their parents. If, what they get in return from their parents are nothing more that irrelevant, and sometimes inappropriate, responses and instructions, the children will feel that it is not worth their trouble to be open with their parents. Also, sometimes, the responses are so dis empowering to the children that they are actually not only counter-productive, they can be very damaging to their children’s development.

We, as parents, have to understand the reasons why giving out advices without careful understanding is not helpful. We will have to learn to respond to our children’s problems in such a way that we empower them to solve their own problems.

We shall now discuss the reasons why giving advices to our children the usaul way is not helpful to our children.

We assume that we know what the problems are and forget to first listen carefully in order to better understand the problems. As a result, due to lack of in-depth understanding of the real issues, the advice that we so readily provide will not be relevant and will not solve the problems.

Without sufficient probing, we may not understand our children’s points of view or perspectives on what trouble them. As a result we do not provide the solutions that our children need. When our children share conflict that they are having with their friends, we may start advising them on how to stay away from those friends while they actually may be feeling guilty for not treating their friends right and want to gain the courage to apologize to their friend. As a result we may be doing further damage to relationships that they are trying so hard to salvage.

In our eagerness and haste to provide the counsel, we forget to extend empathy to our children for the problems they are facing. Our children will not feel connected to us, and they may feel that whatever suggestions we provide have no bearings on their problems and are unlikely to be accepted.

As we are the one dishing out the advice, if the advice turns out to be good, the credit goes to us and not to our children. On the other hand, if the advice is taken and implemented but does not turn out to be successful, it is taken to be our children’s fault as the advice is likely to have been one that was successful when followed by another person. In this case, it is a lose-lose situation for our children because if the advice is successful, we claim the credit and if it is a failure, it is a reflection of our children’s incompetence and stupidity.

We take the position of the experts who have the knowledge and wisdom and we talk down when we give advice, instead of speaking as equals. We treat our children as if they have neither the knowledge nor the skills to handle the problems. It is a one-way traffic and likely to be resented by our children because they feel that we treat them as if they have nothing good to share with us.

We give the message that we think our children cannot develop the solutions themselves. This is disempowering for our children and will do great harm to our children’s development.

We do not show appreciation for the efforts our children have taken in solving their own problems. This will discourage them to take great efforts in coming up with their own solutions and taking the necessary steps to solve the problems when other problems crop up in the future.

They may just want to share their problems with us and do not want or need any counsel from us at all. Whatever advice we provide may not only be futile, but damaging to our children’s self esteem.

We shall now discuss what we shall take into consideration when we respond to our children’s sharing of the issues that they face.

How are you going to understand their problems and help your children gain a better understanding of their own problems so that they can develop their own solutions? As parents, we encourage our children to connect the various aspects of the problem that trouble them in order to help them to have a good grasp of the specific issues that trouble them and encourage them to develop their own solutions.

How are you going to show sufficient empathy with your children so that they feel fully connected with you enough to express their real thoughts and feelings and be receptive of what wisdom you may have to offer? Our children want to feel that we are there with them - not just physically, but emotionally as well. We want them to feel that we do feel the way they feel. It is vital that we do not belittle their feelings.

How are you going to make the situations “win-win” for them? That is, how are you going to encourage them to develop their own solutions and they take the credit when they succeed and also take the credit for the efforts taken when they fail? If they are the ones who come up with the solutions they should be the ones who claim the credits when they succeed. On the other hand, if they fail, provide the encouragement that they have taken the efforts which are by themselves very admirable. When they fail, encourage them to get up again, examine the reasons for failure and try again.

The last, but definitely not the least, question is this: “What else can you do to make them feel that it is always good for them to bring their problems to you?”

EDUCATIOPN REFORMS

Lets not not train our students to learn by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that we may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.

Why not we can introduce open book examination for post graduate studies and also a mini project every semester which in turn will lay foundation for future innovations

REDEFINE HIGHER EDUCATION

The present system of higher education does not serve the purpose for which it has been started. In general education itself has become so profitable a business that quality is lost in the increase of quantity of professional institutions with quota system and politicization adding fuel to the fire of spoil system, thereby increasing unemployment of graduates without quick relief to mitigate their sufferings in the job market of the country. So, the drawbacks of the higher education system underscore the need for reforms to make it worthwhile and beneficial to all concerned. We should redefine the system of higher education in our country from memory based to application oriented learning system

education and politics

Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education. Let educated people like us should start taking lead in politics

AIM OF EDUCATION

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.

jpgandhi speaks

I am beginning to suspect all elaborate and special systems of education. They seem to me to be built upon the supposition that every child or student is a kind of idiot who must be taught to memorize . Whereas if the child or the student is left to himself, he will think more and better, if less "showily". Let him come and go freely, let him touch real things and combine his impressions for himself... Teaching fills the mind with artificial associations that must be got rid of before the child can develop independent ideas out of actual experiences. Lets have more practical oriented subjects rather than theoretical

We find greatest joy, not in getting, but in expressing what we are...Men do not really live for honors or for pay; their gladness is not the taking and holding, but in doing, the striving, the building, the living. It is a higher joy to teach than to be taught. It is good to get justice, but better to do it; fun to have things but more to make them. The happy man is he who lives the life of love, not for the honors it may bring, but for the life itself. I am proud that i am a teacher .

HI FRIENDS

THE ENGINEERING ADMISSIONS IN INDIA FOR THE YEAR 2010-11 IS ALMOST GETTING OVER / THE ANALYSIS REVELS VERY CLEARLY THAT THE BOYS HAVE PREFERRED MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND GIRLS ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING AS THERE FIRST CHOICES / THE CHOICE FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY HAS DEFINITELY GONE UP WHEN COMPARED TO LAST YEAR / WHEN WE ANALYSE CLOSELY THE RURAL STUDENTS HAVE PREFERRED MORE OF CORE ENGINEERING BRANCHES LIKE MECHANICAL AND CIVIL ENGINEERING WHILE URBAN AND CITY STUDENTS HAVE PREFERENCE FOR ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE /

THE PREFERENCE FOR ALL WOMEN ENGINEERING COLLEGE WAS AS USUAL LESS

ESPECIALLY IN TAMIL NADU STUDENTS PREFERRED CHENNAI AND COIMBATORE BASED ENGINEERING COLLEGES

ALMOST 80 % HAVE GOT FILLED THIS YEAR INCLUDING MANAGEMENT SEATS

IT MEANS ACROSS THE INDIA WE WOULD BE HAVING MORE THAT 7.5 LAKS ENGINEERING STUDENTS WOULD BE PASSING OUT IN 2014

FEW QUESTIONS I LIKE TO ASK MY FRIENDS

DO WE HAVE SUCH HUGE JOB REQUIREMENT IN ENGINEERING SECTOR ?

DO YOU FEEL THE COLLEGES WILL MAKE ALL THOSE WHO PASS WILL BE EMPLOYABLE ?

Deemed Universities – future of the role of private investors in higher education

A fortnight has passed since the Union HRD Ministry decided to crack the whip on erring private deemed universities, The flush of emotions on all sides is ebbing away and hence it’s time to raise a few pertinent points that an unbiased audience will have.

Of course, this is not to defend any erring institution. Any educational entrepreneur who fails to render quality education to students deserves little mercy from the monitoring and enforcing organizations. In fact, everyone needs to support the Union government’s affidavit before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India that such institutions be shut down and their students relocated.

But only by due process of law.

If enforcers of the statutes need to act against those who transgress the law, and brazenly at that, it is important that the enforcers, act scrupulously by the law which they are charged with enforcing.

Look at the sequence of events in the last 8 – 10 years: private colleges, mostly those money power and political muscle have demanded and got the deemed universities. Some of them have done so due to sheer dint of hard work and the quality systems they have set in place over the years.

Over the years, a due statutory process necessary to evaluate an institution’s claim to become a deemed university has been diluted. In fact, a few years ago, the head of an institution was apprehended with a load of cash in an airport, which was allegedly to be used to bribe people to into getting university status for his college. That he still got such a status is another story!

Now for the larger questions that rise in the present situation:

What has the Union government or the P.N. Tandon committee planned to ensure that someone in the UGC or the Union government assumes full responsibility for granting University status to sub=standard institutions?

Will there be a full scale investigation in how these institution got the status and what will be penalty that should be levied on such erring officials?

Why are the Union HRD Minister and the P N Tandon committee speaking in two voices? The Union Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal is on record asking “why should we have deemed universities?” However, the Tandon committee has reportedly stated that there was nothing wrong with the concept of deemed universities if deserving institutons attain such a status by dint of merit. Who will have the final say on this?

The National Knowledge Commission and even leading academics like Prof. V.C Kulandaiswamy have said India needs another 1500 universities so that academic leadership, high end research and curriculum planning will rest with the Universities and not be spread among the 18,000 affiliated colleges in the country. It is very difficult to imagine a situation where the government alone will create such a large number of universities in the short term. The only other way would be identify the top 10 per cent of the colleges in the country and grant them university status so that they can assume the responsibility of involving in high quality research.

Private enterprise has to necessarily play a significant role in this. Considering the existing legal lacunae that has led to the deemed university fiasco, it is time the government clearly charts out a path for private investment in higher education.

A legal framework that sets rigorous standards for educational delivery and high quality research and academic activity is immediately needed. And the framework would clearly set out a legal course of action for anyone who tries to misuse the statute, dilute standards or seeks to gain university status by an act of con.

Finally, such a legal framework should include the same standards of quality in governance, educational delivery and research excellence for government run institutions too.

autonomy institutions

The word "Autonomy" is a much misunderstood framework in educational administration. Autonomy is today treated in a very narrow sense of only examination orientation and offering some slightly fine tuned version of the existing university recognized courses or programs.
But autonomy is a concept with far greater depth and zeal. A college should take up the responsibility for achieving excellence and own up both achievements and mistakes in process and delivery of education. That's what autonomy is. In other words, a college should set its own milestones for excellence in input, educational process, assessment and evaluation, besides output and in long term social impact which the institution creates.
Institutions such as IITs, IIMs, BITS and IISc or our own PSG or TCE-Madurai, are well-known organizations that have used their autonomy to the full extent. They maintain a transparent and high quality oriented admission process, attract the best of students and teaching talent, best of researchers, in a vibrant educational ecosystem, have tough markers for examination question paper setting, educational process and classroom delivery, and output. These institutions have also made a social impact in the long run. their alumni are leaders in industry, education, politics, business, academics, etc.
In terms of academics, even India's well known institutions are not fully utilizing their academic and administrative autonomy to create more innovative courses/programs. In American or British universities, it is not uncommon to find someone pursuing sciences and arts/fine arts in their UG program. Also, institutions abroad believe in creating revolutionary academic changes by putting disparate differently-thinking minds in one place. For ex: history, science and agriculture major students have the opportunity to work together to look at how agricultural sciences have grown and how some new innovations can be fostered in this....the possibilities of utilizing autonomy to benefit all stakeholders is immense.
Affiliating colleges: To quote Dr. V.C. Kulandhaiswamy, former VC of Anna University and Madurai Kamaraj University, affiliation is a curse and an outdated concept. In the affiliating system we see that 85 per cent of the students are outside the university system and only 15 per cent are within the university system, with access to the best of professors, teaching learning process, equipment and research exposure. His suggestion which has also been echoed by the National Knowledge Commission, is that the govt should select the top 10 per cent higher performing institutions among the 18,000 plus colleges in the country, and grant them university status. As for the rest, they should be given a five year time window to either become on par with the universtities, or be relegated to community colleges that offer diplomas and not full degrees. In the existing affiliating system, universties neither have the time to manage its own affairs or the affairs of their so-called affiliated colleges. So research, teaching innovations and process innovations suffer and cannot be sustained.
Deemed Universities: It is clear that this process has turned out to be a problem areas in terms of money, muscle and political power. While government is dithering and seems to be undecided in whether to continue with deemed universties or not, students are clearly avoiding even better performing institutions, which manage to get deemed status. So first the stigma about deemed universities should go. for this, colleges should not be encouraged to apply and seek the status. This becomes a den of corruption. Instead, the govt should put in place a robust system with clearly defiined weightage for input, process and output excellence, encourage all colleges to meet the high quality milestones or indicators and once colleges reach that type of excellence, they should be granted deemed univ status by an independent empowered committee.
you can give specific examples of negatives and positives of the deemed university and autonomous colleges. the pros and cons of this.

university reforms

The main points that have been highlighted in the media by the Task Force are:

1) There will be a National Council for Higher Education and Research as mooted by the Yash Pal committee

2) It will be governed by a NCHER Bill (Act).

3) It will give norms to govts and states on appointment of University VCs.

4) TN and Kerala are some govts which have opposed it.

5) TN wants Hr Edn back in the State List and not in the Concurrent List.

6) But this is not in the ambit of the Task Force to roll out the NCHER.

My thoughts:

1) It is a good and positive move to reform University administration.

2) It is also good that some basic guidelines and norms are given for university top level appointments.

3) But it will be better if govt moves away from university administration.

4) When all other systems in society are moving towards further reforms, we cannot use a 19th century idea of government imposing its whims on learning centres.

5) A 21st century Education 2.0 idea would be to allow universities to with their own solutions and reform accelarators.

6) Let the government gives a reform framework giving a list of guidelines and norms and move away. Chiefly, such a framework should involve academics, civil society and industry stakeholders.

For ex: A panel of three or five ppl from these sections should form the VC /Registrar or Dean appointments panel. And globally visible advertisements to attract the best of talent. The panel will vet the responses and go through a clearly defined process to select

7) Also the selection norms should clearly state the objectives of the appointment and spell out what are the expected deliverables /expected outcomes of the tenure. After each year, the VC appointee should undergo a clear appraisal process where he/she should show quantifiable outcomes of the year long work. It need not be research papers, Ph Ds or funds secured for/through projects or consultancy. Let the selection committee define the outcomes, processes.

8) Secondly, we cannot have the present governance structure in universities.

9) When deemed universities are pulled up for packing governing boards with their family members, the same accusal can be made at government. Look at existing State universities. The government packs the Syndicate or governing boards with its own people, however incompetent they are. After all they are only IAS officers who have little academic exposure or an outcome based perspective.

10) Whether govt or private or corporate universities, the best reform would be to clearly give competencies and qualifications for governing board members. It is no one’s concern whether they come from within the family or outside. Whether individuals sitting in the Board are competent and qualified is the only question to be answered.

11) In a country where more than 70 per cent of corporates, media houses, newspapers or political organizations are run by families, let’s understand that this is a country that believes in family first. There is nothing wrong. To repeat, whether the person is competent to hold the post is the most important aspect to be decided.
